The upgrade steps are detailed here: http://resources.arcfmsolution.com/UpgradeTo101.html

I don't think it's necessary to revert to ESRI objects before upgrading - I never have. Follow the upgrade guide closely to make sure you get Session Manager upgraded. If you have Designer there's a significant migration step for handling the changes to CU management. In my experience the steps outlined are reasonably complete - there should be no surprises.

Hi Kevin

There is no need to convert any ArcFM objects prior to upgrade.

Are you performing an in-situ upgrade or moving your data to another geodatabase server?

I have performed a migration for an existing Oracle 10g (32bit) ArcSDE 9.3.1 SP2 physical server to an Oracle 11g R2 (64 bit) ArcSDE 10.1 (no service pack) virtual machine. This was all done in a staging environment, so no production set up was at risk of getting broken.

This was quite a time consuming process. I'm our only GIS systems specialist, but it's quite do-able. I'd be curious to find out how you are going with this.
