I am in the middle of upgrading from Designer91 to Designer92. I have upgraded my Geodatabase to ArcGIS92 and ArcFM92 as well. The designs I create in Designer 92 are working fine, but when I attempt to open the previous designs which have been create in Designer91, I get the following error message:
The design could not be loaded because an edit operation failed to start. For a personal Geodatabase, check that is writeable. For a versioned Geodatabase, check that the dataset is register as versioned.

I have checked almost everything and as I mentioned earlier the designer works fine with the new designs.
I am wonder if anybody has experienced this problem or could say what I have missed.
Thank you,
Farhad Kazemi

I have also experienced this with some 9.1 designs and as well have tried everything i can think of...

whenever i see this issue i also get an error message stating there are duplicate values for DESIGNER_ID for that particular design. i have looked in every table and i can't find this attribute. i was thinking it was maybe a duplicate record in the MM_WMS_COMPATIBLE_UNIT_LIBRARY but this doesn't seem to be the case. do you also get this message in the event viewer?

one thing about this error i have noticed is that at first a design will not open. you go to open it, the mobile layers show up and then it craps out and only the backdrop layers remain. You get the error you mention below the second and any subsequent times you try to open ANY design until you restart the app. i have users who say they can't open any of their designs, when in fact there is only one with an issue. a restart of the app will let them open the rest, as long as they don't open the original broken one.

ANyways, i don't know much more than this. if anyone has any more information it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with this issue.
There were some permission issues related to some specific edit tasks and my DBA fix them. Now, I am able to open the designs which have been created in 91 in 92 environment , but I have run to another problem. I am only able to open one design in every ArcMap session. I have to close the ArcMap to be able to open the second Design, no matter it is an old design or newly created design. If I don’t close the ArcMap, I get the same error message (The design could not be loaded because an edit operation failed to start…) and a warning message stating duplicate DESIGNER_ID (in miner event viewer) when I attempt to open the second design .
I have tested different scenarios and noticed that I can open several designs without closing the ArcMap if I don’t save the designs.
My users experience this error a few times in Designer 91 during the 20 months we are in production with designer, but I am not able to open more than one design in every ArcMap 92 session at all.

i'm guessing you are experiencing this in an enterprise environment? i haven't seen what you are describing in the last post.. and i can't find that designer_id attribute anywhere. i've only had this happen in a mobile environment using a miscrosoft access database.

what were the edit permissions you had your DBA modify?

(and in my first post i meant to say i was experiencing this with 9.2 designs - i've never seen it in 9.1)

Yes , I am experiencing this problem in our enterprise environment. We just upgraded our Geodatabase to SDE92 in SQL 2005 environment, and our ArcGIS and Designer from 91 to 92. The number of tasks for which the permission should be set in SQL 2005 are much more than SQL 2000. A few of these permissions were not granted to the user name I was using to open the old designs. I can ask my DBA for more details if you think it helps.
My main point is that everything is working fine in 91 in SQL 2000 environment. I am wonder if some of our forum members who upgraded their GIS enterprise to 92 may experience these problems and/or came with some solutions.

Thank you,
Farhad Kazemi

Julie,

I have found what causes the error "failing edit operation..." in my case. I have created an ArcObject function in designer 91 which automatically save some specific edits. Recompiling this function in 92 environment somehow leaves an edit operation open even I unload the design and stop the edit session. As a result, I have to close the ArcMap to kill the existing open operation.

Simply, I have added “Editor.StopOperationâ€
